When not working on my PhD, I can normally be found stomping through the woods or fussing a four-legged rogue (sometimes even my own small but mighty Parson’s Jack Russell terrier, Brock!).
I have loved, lived with and trained dogs throughout my life, sharing my love of the great outdoors with various pastoral breeds, lurchers and now (bravely!), terriers.
My professional experience includes working with wolves at the UK wolf conservation trust (delivering husbandry and studying wolf behaviour), looking after temporarily kennelled dogs and cats at Heathrow Airport Animal Reception Centre, and a myriad of other animal-focused positions.
I hold an FdSc in animal behaviour and welfare, a BSc honours degree in animal conservation science, and I am currently completing my PhD in animal/plant chemical communication and behaviour.
Since the age of nineteen I have worked as a zookeeper at Twycross Zoo, gaining 21 years of practical, hands-on animal experience. My specialism is in primate care, but I have also worked with numerous domestic pet species, reptiles and insects.
A critical element of my work with animals has involved providing enrichment for purposes as varied as delivering basic care, managing behaviour and delivering diet. I am also an experienced animal trainer, using positive reinforcement training to make husbandry less stressful for both keeper and animal.
I have always shared my life with a variety of gundogs and hounds and am currently lucky enough to be owned by a smooth-haired, miniature dachshund, Eugene!
I have an NPTC in animal care as well as a BTEC first diploma in animal care. I also hold a city and guilds in kennel craft in addition to NVQ level 2 customer care.
